Each month of the year is associated with one or more birthstones. Since ancient times birthstones have been believed to possess healing powers and therapeutic influence.
According to 1st century historian Josephus, birthstones are related with the twelve stones in Aaron’s breastplate, twelve months and twelve signs of zodiac.
George Frederick Kunz, an American mineralogist, claimed that custom of wearing birthstones originated in 18th century Poland. It is believed that wearing stone associated with month of one’s birth brings luck.
